Circular Economy

For many, waste is a source of energy and greenhouse gas emissions. For Tarkett, waste is a precious raw material with very low carbon footprint, because where others see waste, we see opportunities. We are shifting to a circular economy.

Creating a second life for waste

At Tarkett, we’re committed to a sustainable, circular economy that creates value for everyone, closing the loop on waste, preserving natural resources and reducing our impact on climate change to give you peace of mind on your product choice.

Spotlight on EcoBase: transforming chalk into carpet tile backing

In the Netherlands, we established a partnership with drinking water companies to upcycle waste chalk into stabiliser for our Gold-level Cradle to Cradle certified Tarkett EcoBase® carpet backing. A great example of circular economy.

Join our ReStart® take-back & recycling program

It all starts with the collection of end-of-use flooring for recycling. Once sorted, these used floors are processed using unique technologies that separate the components and remove the adhesive. Each component can then be reused to make a new floor covering. This is how we close the loop!

Restart program at Tarkett for circular economy

119,000

tonnes of flooring collected since 2010 via the ReStart® take-back & recycling programme, which is the equivalent of 12 Eiffel towers.

Restart® is active in 29 countries.

We collect and recycle vinyl, linoleum and carpet tiles – both post-installation off-cuts and end-of-use flooring.

Tarkett and Ikea recycled flooring
Pioneering post-use recycling: a story with IKEA

We recaptured 10,000 sqm of used vinyl flooring from IKEA department store in Stockholm, Sweden and made it into flooring for the IKEA store in Jönköping. This climate-friendly project has saved close to 100 tonnes of CO2 emissions. This is equivalent to the amount of carbon captured by 5,500 trees grown for 10 years.

Tarkett and Aquafil for circular economy
Changing the game on carpet tile recycling

Through our partnership with Aquafil, Tarkett can recycle 100% of a carpet tile.

Estonian ash piles to turn into carbon negative raw material for vinyl flooring

Pär Larshans

Tarkett is an excellent example of a company that shares our vision and commitment, and with whom we work closely. Our mission is to transform Estonian ash waste into calcium carbonate while capturing carbon dioxide. This mineral filler turned carbon sink will be used by Tarkett for the manufacturing of its future vinyl flooring.

Carbon Footprint

The building and construction industry can make a major difference when it comes to climate impact and preservation of resources, as they represent 39% of global GHG emissions (production, transport & incineration) and 60-70% of total waste*. As a leading flooring manufacturer, we have a significant opportunity and responsibility to create change in our industry.
